Briefly; What is plus addressing?
It’s a part of the email standard that lets you receive any emails that are sent to you with a + before the @ symbol. It’s great for testing, easy to use, and turned on in Outlook.
It’s why:
melitta.buckley@roubler.com
And
melitta.buckley+uat@roubler.com both turn up in my Outlook.
And it’s as simple as that, straight before the @ write + then whatever you want. It still comes to you.
Why use Plus Addressing?
Easy
You don’t have to do any signup work, and you have access.
All emails will come to your Outlook as normal
Even though you have multiple addresses:
melitta.buckley@roubler.com
melitta.buckley+uat@roubler.com
melitta.buckley+kbauthor@roubler.com
And can give them out to people easily, they all turn up at your Outlook the same.
It makes it easy to set up filters.
You can easily set up a filter in Outlook to act based on who the email was sent to, which plus addressing makes it easy.
It’s easy to make new testing accounts
When testing software, you often need multiple user accounts. This makes it very easy to sign up an extra user:
melitta.buckley+partneraccesslevel@roubler.com
melitta.buckley+employeeaccesslevel@roubler.com
It’s more secure than making a bunch of test accounts using GMail/random internet providers.
We work with a lot of client information, and accesses.
Often we have to test things to do with adding new accounts, or checking how exact setups work.
If you do this using Gmail, then you’re giving full access to that information to Google, and potentially anyone Google sells to.
You’re also making it riskier to be you, since if you use your personal email for testing and someone gets access to your personal email they might also get access to client data/whatever you' have sent to, plus any accounts signed up to it. Also you might be liable if this happens as you’ll be in breach of IT policies.
Some examples of Plus Addressing using a Roubler address:
anjana.kumari+rocks@roubler.com
anjana.kumari+DeservesAPromotion@roubler.com
anjana.kumari+IsAnAllRoundGoodGuy@roubler.com
Just out of interest; you can do the same thing with Gmail accounts.
So when I’ve been going to open homes recently, I’ve been giving them a specific version of my email address
my.embarassing.gmail.account+openhomes@gmail.com
Or I’ve signed up for my power & internet bills at:
mailto:my.embarassing.gmail.account+bills@gmail.com
Then I can set up a filter easily so I can keep track of my bills, and block all of the real estate agents once I’ve found a house.
